Picking Your Best Running Trail
Nice and Easy
When you want an easy jog with gorgeous examples of nature's beauty surrounding you, finding a better option than the Laurel Falls running trail is a challenging task. This paved trail is 2.6 miles long and sits in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. During your run, you'll see flowers and other vegetation depending on the time of year. Who knows? You might even see a black bear while on the trail.
Pro Tip: This trail is extremely popular, and the parking lot fills fast. Arrive early or late for the best experience.
Pick Up The Intensity
The Deep Creek Trail is the perfect solution for a healthy compromise between easy and moderately challenging. This running trail is 3.4 miles long and offers beautiful views of the Tom Branch Falls. During your run, you'll see tubers floating below and other examples of Smoky Mountain fun as you continue.
Running Tip: The gravel trail rises in grade as you continue. Shorten your run to maintain a leisurely pace or continue for a little more challenge.
Challenge Yourself
Do you want to challenge yourself while exploring running routes in the Smoky Mountains? We have the ideal paths laid out for you to conquer.
Cades Cove Loop
The Cades Cove Loop is one of the most popular options for visitors of all kinds. However, this loop is closed to traffic on Wednesday and Saturday mornings before 10am, from the second week in May to the last Saturday of October, making it a favorite for runners (and cyclists). While the road is gentle and packed with chances to see wildflowers and wildlife, the challenge lies in covering the whole loop since it goes for 11 miles.
Greenbrier Area
The experienced runners in your group will adore the Greenbrier Area, thanks to plenty of options to see sights like the wildflowers blooming and the ability to adjust the challenge level. The main trail is a gravel road along the river for six miles. However, you can further push your journey by continuing another four miles on the rugged trail to see the cascades for one of the best examples of
For the Serious Runners Only
The Smoky Mountains are massive, and the ultimate trail challenge is the largest possible and is for serious runners only. The trail is the one and only Newfound Gap loop. This loop starts at Sugarlands Visitor Center and goes to the North Carolina/Tennessee state line just past Newfound Gap. At Newfound Gap, you'll turn around and return to your starting point, making this trail cover roughly 26.2 miles roundtrip.
Pro Tip: This route shares the road with traffic so wear reflective gear and stay alert.
